The Apartment is a sculptural installation, performance and accompanying video. It is the recreation of an apartment setting complete with fridge, cooktop, TV, coffee table, chair and
11 foot facade that acted as an delimitiator of boundaries.
All made from free, found and scavanged materials.
The work seeks to explore ideas around increased survival, how objects exist in relation to each other and
how they are present but often unused.
Some things to consider when encountering this work:
Eggs do not need to be refergerated but industrial society has delegated agriculture to the peripheries. They now require transportation as well as refrigeration.
We do not need to sit in chairs, it is actually healthier to sit cross legged but we have adapted to sitting in chairs and so we need tables as well.
We live alone in apartements they sit vacant for 8 or more hours a day but yet we own a thousand things and use them occasionally.
This installation was completley made from garbage and found materials. The work recreates the everyday from the detritus of the everyday.
Materials included carboard, styrofoam, plexiglass off cuts, cracked bike frames and odds & ends, easily aquired in alleyways and dumpsters.
VHS Video “DADA TV” 0:03:26 runtime
The video features a young man (Victor) entering his apartement and turning on the TV. He looks bored and switches through channels quickly. The TV (Sarah) provides him with painted images none of which compel Victor. He becomes overstimulated by the cacaphonous display, switches off the TV and leaves.
