Trash Talk

VHS Video 7 Episodes

Trash Talk is talk show that took place in the
Garbage Conglomorate Theatre where Jen became the host and asked participants to come on the show and raise issues related to waste. They would then be discussed by those on stage as well as interjections from the audience.

Trash Talk functions as an educational platform where the host is a facilitator for the public discussion. Trash Talk became an incubator of ideas, jokes, opinions and perhaps even solutions. It’s sucess demonstrated the public’s enthusiasm to advocate for change and engage in direct action.

Although Trash Talk is a production that required participants to mobilize and react to the problems of waste it fold back into the continuity of discussion.  Transcending communication into direct action is not a part of this particular project.

Trash Talk was exhibited with the accompanying awning from the Garbage Conglomorate Theatre. The Theatre was created from garbage salvaged from the the art institution for which the work was being produced. The materials used included a crate salvaged from the recycling of an on campus gallery that had transported an object for display in order to build the theatre platform. The awning was made from recycled canvas paintings sewn together.

When the work was displayed two monitors played diffrent episodes of Trash Talk simultaneously to create a cacophonous sound of voices that raise problems and solutions to waste.
